Looks Like mUrder
In this episode, we find ourselves in the year 1899, on the 24th of November. This case revolves around Mr. W. L. Thomas, of Bradford, Ontario, who is in Toledo, Ohio to attend college as a Medical Student. Mr. Thomas is found dead and a series of speculation begins to occur at this very dark and mysterious case as it unfolds, all stemming from finding the body on Adams Street.
Who Was W. L. Thomas?
I was curious to learn more about WHO W.L. Thomas actually was. As we can see, the newspaper article (and the ONLY article I could find anywhere) is very vague, only listing initials and where he was from, but all the other details about who this man was were clearly missing.
So, The Genealogy Investigator put on her Genealogy Hat and started digging (which I love best, anyways!)… and I was able to uncover some really interesting finds about Mr. W.L. Thomas and his much too short life.
William Lawrence Thomas is his FULL name. He was born in 1881 in Brant, Ontario, Canada to Elias Thomas (1855-1928) and Charlotte Miller (1856-1924).
In 1891, according to the 1891 Census of Canada, W. L. Thomas is 10 years old, living with his parents, Elias (38) a farmer who is also the head of the household, Charlotte (35), his grandfather, Lawrence Thomas (63), and his siblings, Melisa Thomas (16), Frederick Thomas (5) and Norman Thomas (3). The family is living in Brantford County, Canada.
The family is said to be a part of the Mohawk, Six Nations of the Grand River in Canada, which is interesting, as we learn that W.L. Thomas is in Toledo, Ohio for his studies in the dental college at Toledo M.D. College.
This is also significant as I uncovered William Lawrence’s burial in the Ohsweken Baptist Church in Six Nations, Brant County, Ontario, Canada.
W.L. Thomas was murdered at the age of 18 in Ironville, Lucas County, Ohio in 1899. Interestingly enough, I was unable to uncover a death record for W. L. Thomas or William Lawrence Thomas in Toledo, Ohio, much like the details of this murder and any investigator that was forthcoming seemed to vanish.
This is a tragic stories and interestingly enough, W. L. Thomas was one of nine children born to Elias and Charlotte and the only child to come to America. All of W. L.’s siblings stayed within the Six Nations area of Ontario, Canada for the duration of their lives.
