Time Travel in Toledo, Ohio - The Couldwell Family

Here is a bit of history about the COULDWELL Family living in Toledo, Ohio.

William E. Couldwell was an Undertaker of Couldwell and Flagler Funeral Home that was located at 1855 Collingwood Ave. Toledo, Ohio in downtown Toledo, Ohio.

1855 Collingwood Ave. is the address of the BARTLEY MANSION. The mansion was built by wealthy grocer, Rudolph A. Bartley in 1905, and after he passed away in the early 1920’s, the home, which was zoned commercial, was used by Couldwell & Flagler’s Funeral Home as a mortuary. In 1996, the 10,000 square-foot mansion was converted into 10 apartment units, which is how it is still occupied today.

William was born in England about 1863 to Alfred Bakes Couldwell and Eleanore Buehly (Bewley). ALfred and Eleanore immigrated to America in 1866 from Carlisle, Cumberland, England with two of their three children, William and Alice. Their third child, William’s sister Eleanore (Nellie) was born in Ohio in 1876.

William married Mary (May) Sullivan on 27 Nov 1882 in Lucas County, Ohio. Mary was born in Ireland. Mary and William had x5 children, but only x2 of those children would live past the age of 6. William and Mary raised their children in Toledo, with the family living at 122 Tenth Street in Toledo, Ohio in 1900, with a servant, Lydia Spooner (18) also living with the family.

I found it very sad that William’s life seemed to be surrounded in death, with the funeral business, as well as the heartbreak and tragedy of the deaths of his own children at such young ages.

William died in 1930 from Broncho Pneumonia when he was only 65 years old. Mary and he lived at 609 Stratford Place in Toledo, Ohio. Mary would continue her life on Stratford Place until her own death in 1938 at the age of 74. Mary died of natural causes. The family had a plot in Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio.
