The Prentice Family Coat of Arms

Today, I’m going to tell you a little story about the PRENTICE family.

Our closest MOST COMMON RECENT ANCESTOR (with connections to Toledo | Oregon, Ohio is:

Joseph Prentice (1782-1845)

Joseph Prentice was born on the 6th of May 1782 in Connecticut to Capt. Joseph Prentis III (1733-1804) and Rachel Gilbert (unk-1860).

Joseph’s father, Joe was born in New London, Connecticut. He was a sea-captain, and the son of Joseph II (1701-1773) and Mercy Gilbert (1709-1743).

Joe raised his family on a farm on the Lake’s Pond estate in New London, CT, the homestead being on the old road to Colchester.

Joseph II moved his family, Joseph III included, to Butternuts, Ostego County, New York before he was killed in 1804 by the fall of a tree in Plymouth, a few miles from Butternutes, and was interred in Butternuts. His widow, Joseph III’s step-mother, Margaret Comstock, lived on to be upwards of ninety, with her son, Daniel, half brother to Joseph III in Sherburne, New York.

Joseph came to Port Lawrence (Toledo, Ohio) in 1817, at the age of 35, bringing his family and household goods all the way from Buffalo, New York. He was accompanied on his western journey by his second wife, Eleanor.

In 1825, Joseph bought a tract of land in Oregon, Ohio where he would go on and live until his death in 1845. Joseph remarried after the death of his first wife, Eda in 1811. Joseph shared three children, Augustus Prentice (1805-1852), William Prentice (1807-1872) and Nancy Prentice (1811-1889) with Eda.

He would go on and have four more children with his second wife, Eleanor, Frederick Prentice (1822-1913), Mary Ann Prentice (1823-1844), Joseph C. Prentice (1822-1913), and Walter Prentice.

Joseph died on the 6th of May (his 63rd birthday) in 1845 and is buried in Willow Cemetery in Oregon, Ohio.

Fredrick Prentice (1822-1913)

Frederick, a son of Joseph, was born on the 6th of December, 1822 in Port Lawrence, Ohio, in a small frame house on Perry Street, about half way between Summit and St. Clair Streets. His father died when he was only thirteen years old and he was charged with the responsibility of taking care of the family. He was the first WHITE CHILD born in Port Lawrence, Ohio (now Toledo, Ohio).

During his childhood an Indian nurse helped to take care of him. He soon learned to speak the Indian language more fluently than English. This helped him act as an interpreter for the Indian agents and traders that heavily influenced the Oregon, Ohio area. By interpreting and hunting and fishing, he made enough money to support the family.

When Frederick was eighteen, he supplied wood for steamboats and sold his product on the market.

Fred was prominent in the early history of Lucas County, Ohio (Toledo). He was a wealthy OIL man.

Later resided in Michigan. He married (first) Anna (Mary Ann Hicks) (1823-1844) on the 8th of May 1842 in Lucas County, Ohio and had a son, Joseph H. Prentice (1842 - Unk).

He married (second) Sara Ann Maddock (1823-1853) on the 3rd of Jan 1844 in Lucas County, Ohio and had a daughter, Mary Edla Prentice (1844-1843).

He married (third) Mary Jane Parks (1828 - Unk) on the 28th of December 1853 in Washtenaw, Michigan, and had sons Frederick Ashley Prentice Jr. (1853-1885), and Charles Prentice (1855 - Unk).

He then married (fourth) Lydia Amanda Stillwell (1845-1912) on the 6th of December 1885 in Manhattan, New York City, NY. He retired in New York City.

Fred died on the 17th of March 1913 in Orange County, New York. He is buried in Willow Cemetery in Oregon, Ohio.
