Dr. William W. Jones

Here is the flower-covered casket of former Toledo Mayor, William W. Jones on display at Toledo's Memorial Hall in 1892.

William W. Jones was born in Smyrna, Chenango County, New York on 28 Sept 1819. He went to a district school for his education until his 10th year, then he went to a private academy for three additional years, then to an academy in Salem, N.Y., where he would finish his studies.

At about the age of 13, William entered a printing office at Forestville, Chautauqua county, New York, then when that office closed, he went to Buffalo, New York. He was employed on a literary publication for a time, then started working for the Buffalo Commercial Advertiser, where he would work until he moved to Dresden, Muskingum County, Ohio in 1836.

William took an interest, as partner, with his brother in the wholesale manufacturing business of flour and selling merchandise for a time. But, in 1844, he knew he wanted more and began his studies in medicine. His preceptor was Dr. W. W. Rickey of Dresden, who was very prominent in his profession of medicine, as he was the president of the Ohio State Medical Society.

William was a student of Dr. Frank H. Hamilton, then Professor of Surgery in the University of Buffalo, where he would graduate in the winter of 1848-1849.

Once William graduated, he made his way to Toledo, Ohio, which in 1849 was a town of less than 4,000 inhabitants, and William began practicing his life-calling on these new strangers.

The first case of lithotomy successfully performed in the Toledo area was done by William, and he quickly became a very prominent person as a physician in the city. It is with this “fame” that he stepped into the political arena, serving six years as mayor of Toledo, elected into office in 1871, 1873, and 1877.

William married Adeline Kate Knaggs on 3 Feb 1851 in Lucas County, Ohio. Together, they had x5 children.
