Valentine (Sr) was born 25 Feb 1826 in New York. He married Emeline Francis (Dodge) Granger (1830-1894) and they settled in Toledo, Ohio. They had 3 children, Mary Emma (Granger) Ketcham (1850-1876), Clara R. (Granger) Starr (1852-1926) , and Valentine Whitman Granger Jr.

Valentine (Sr) died 5 May 1921 and is buried at Forest Cemetery in Toledo, Ohio.

Granger was a member of the Middle Bass Club from 1881-1896.
