TIME TRAVEL in OREGON, OHIO - WYNN FAMILY PART 1

Hello and Welcome Back to WEEK 3 of our Oregon, Ohio [take over!]

I am so excited to share more about the:

WYNN FAMILY

If you’re familiar with Oregon, Ohio, then I am certain you’ve heard of WYNN ROAD.

But, have you ever thought to yourself… WHO is BEHIND WYNN ROAD?

I know I have more than once, especially since I live a few few houses away from the corner of Wynn Road.

And.. while the WYNN FAMILY history lacks photos, which is a big disappointment for ME (if you know …. you know!) - they sure DO HAVE HISTORY!

OREGON, OHIO’S WYNN Brothers

Our known Wynn’s in Oregon, Ohio as early settlers are four (4) brothers, Thomas, Sam, Smith, and Jonathan Wynn.

JONATHAN WYNN (1817-1895)

Jonathan Wynn is the oldest of the four brothers, born on 28 Apr 1817 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. I believe he might have been a twin to James, as both were born in the same year, but I believe James might not have survived child birth, as the records are very slim.

Jonathan was born to JOHN WYNN (1791-1864) and REBECCA HOLLMAN (1793-1866). John and Rebecca moved the family from Chester County, PA to Crawford County, Ohio in October of 1834. It was around 1835 that John (1791-1864) had 80 acres of land surveyed in Wooster, Crawford County, Ohio.

On the 10 of December 1838, Jonathan Wynn (1817-1895) married Eliza Cummins of Crawford County, OH.

In 1853, Jonathan (son of JOHN and REBECCA) purchased 160 acres of densely wooded territory off of BAY SHORE ROAD in what is now known as Oregon, Ohio.

Jonathan was an active member of the community. He spent some time surveying within the area. He served as Justice of Peace in Manhattan Township and was later even elected as Recorder.

Many people came to Jonathan and Eliza’s home to seek legal advice, and on Sundays people would gather to hear the news and to have their legal papers signed and filled by Jonathan Wynn.

Jonathan and Eliza had x9 children, some of whom stayed within the Oregon, Ohio area through their lives.

In 1863, on the 8th of May, Jonathan even put his own life on the line to help one of his neighbors, Mr. Amos Brown, whose brother came into his home and shot and killed his wife and children. When Amos returned to his home after being absent during the murders, he was met by his own brother, the murderer and his brothers rifle. Mr. Brown was able to avoid death by his brothers hand by some miracle and Mr. Jonathan Wynn, Mr. Brown’s neighbor, showed up bearing arms, prepared to shoot the murderer on the spot. Mr. Brown’s brother, instead, took shelter in a locked room after swallowing a pill of poison and dying within the room some twenty minutes later.

This article really shows Mr. Jonathan Wynn’s character, always willing to help, even if he is putting his own life into the line of fire.

On 21 January 1895, in Oregon, Ohio - Mr. Jonathan Wynn passed away from measles. His daughter, Mrs. Haag and Dr. H. P. Haag were called to Toledo due to her father, Jonathan’s death.

Jonathan was buried in Oregon, Lucas County, Ohio.

Thomas Wynn (1822-1890)

The next oldest son to have tied to Oregon, Ohio is Thomas Wynn, brother to Jonathan and son to JOHN WYNN (1791-1864) and Rebecca Hollman (1793-1866).

Thomas was born on 3 December 1822 in Chester County, PA. He moved with the family to Crawford County, Ohio around 1834 to settle. A few years later, on 29 September 1843, Thomas marries local Crawford County, Ohio native, Nancy Cummings (1824-1911) in Richland, Ohio.

Thomas and Nancy moved to Lucas County shortly after their marriage, when Lucas County was still a wilderness but through their hard work they cleared off a large farm and were surrounded by all the comforts of life.

It is said that Thomas was a kind neighbor and a worthy citizen in Oregon, Ohio. He was said to be charitable to those in less fortune than himself.

In 1880, Thomas purchased 160 acres on what is now known as WYNN ROAD and he built a log cabin. At one point in time, he even donated an acre of this land to be used for a school building and one fourth acre on Bay Share Road to be used for a Church.

Thomas and Nancy had x6 children, but only 2 of those children made it past infancy. They also adopted George Washington Momany (1860-1944) who took on the surname WYNN and gave the WYNN surname to his own five children.

About four years before his death, Thomas Wynn’s health started to fail. He continued doing his duties in a lighter fashion up until a few days before he left this earth.

He passed away on 22 Jun 1890 at his home on Bay Shore Road, in Oregon, Ohio. He is buried in the North Oregon Cemetery in Oregon, Lucas County, Ohio.

Samuel Wynn (1825-1913)

Next in line is Samuel Wynn (1825-1913) who is the brother of both Jonathan and Thomas, son of JOHN WYNN (1791-1864) and REBECCA HOLLMAN (1793-1866) and husband of MIRIAM CURTIS (1840-1932).

Samuel was born on the 31st of May 1825 in Chester, PA. He married Miriam Curtis (1840-1932) on the 24th of October 1858 in Crawford County, Ohio.

Samuel purchased a FARM ON DuPont Road, in Oregon, Ohio and lived most of his life on this farm.

Samuel and Miram had four children, all but one stay in the Toledo, Ohio area and one traveled to Arkansas and lived his long life in the Little Rock area.

Not much is known about Samuel. He seemed to be a quiet and reserved member of the community. He lived his life in Oregon, Ohio and passed away on the 12th of February, 1913. He was laid to rest on the 15th of February of 1913 at the North Oregon Cemetery, within the homestead in Lucas County, Ohio.

Eurat Smith Wynn (1833-1910)

****EURAT SMITH WYNN (1833-1910)

From which WYNN ROAD is named*

The last brother with ties to Oregon, Ohio is Eurat (Ewart) Smith Wynn, born on the 10th of March 1833 in Chester County, PA. Smith married Sarah A. Hageman (1835-1896) on the 14th of August 1859 in Crawford County, Ohio before coming to Manhattan Township and purchasing 160 acres of land on what is now Wynn Road. On this 160 acres of land, Smith built a Farm house for his family.

Smith Wynn is the WYNN that Wynn Road originated from. ***

Smith was a good citizen and genuinely interested in helping and improving the community.

Smith and Sarah had six children, most of whom stayed in the area.

On the 2nd of October of 1896, tragedy struck the family when Mrs. Sarah Wynn was attempting to light her gas stove and she became enveloped in flames and was burned to death.

From the Ohio Democrat on the 6 Oct 1896, Tuesday, Page 1

The story behind the accident is that Mrs. Sarah Wynn was carelessly handling gasoline while filling her stove tank and spilled a quantity of liquid on the floor. When she lit the stove burner the woodwork immediately took fire, enveloping her in the flames. She was in terrible agony, rushing from the house, trying to smother the flames, but her garments burned until nothing was left but the belt she was wearing. She lived until morning, begging for friends and family to end her life during her moments of consciousness.

This tragedy left a last effect on the family.

A few years later, on the 19th of June 1910, Smith passed away at his home in Oregon, Ohio. Smith was 77 years old.

Early Wynn History

In my research, I was able to find ancestors of the four (4) brothers named here, and their father, JOHN WYNN (1791-1864) back to WALES.

JOHN WYNNE (1540 - UNK)

The Wynn Family begins (document wise) with John Wynne (1540-Unk) who was born in Wales and married Catherine Salisbury (1543 - Unk). Catherine was the daughter of Robert Salisbury (1510- Unk) and Jane Unk (1513 - Unk).

John and Catherine had one child, a son, JOHN WYNNE (1570-1638) .

JOHN WYNNE (1570-1638)

John Wynne (1570-1638) was married to Grace Morgan (1570-1598) on the 29th of October 1588 in Bodfari, Flintshire, Wales.

Grace is the daughter of Cael Morgan (1530 - Unk) and Mary Unk (1533 - Unk) and John (1570) and Grace (1570) were blessed with four children:

  • Harri ap Cynrig Wynne (1585-unk)

  • Thomas ap John Wynne (1589-1638)*

  • Mary ap Rees Wynne (1590-1591)

  • Jane ap Rees Wynne (1595-1640)

John Wynne (1570) passed away on the 7th of October 1638 and was supposedly buried in Norfolk, England.

THOMAS JOHN WYNNE (1589-1638)

Thomas John Wynne (1589), son of John Wynne (1570) was born on the 20th of December 1589 in Yskeiviog, Bron Vadog, Wales.

Thomas like to build and in 1600 he built the Bron Fadog Estate [see below].

Thomas married Catherine Lloyd (1589-1635) on the 11th of April 1615 in Nennerch, Flintshire, Wales. Catherine was the daughter of John David Lloyd (1570-1636) and Grace Salusbury (1565-1612).

Thomas and Catherine had five children:

  • Anne Elizabeth Wynne (1617-1689)

  • Harry Wynne (1619-1620)

  • Edward Wynne (1622-1672)

  • Thomas Wynne (1627-1692)*

  • Peter Wynne (1630-Unk)

Thomas passed away on the 7th of October 1638 at the estate he built, Bron Fadoc, in Caerwys Township, Yceifiog Parish, Flintshire, Wales.

Dr. Thomas Wynne (1627-1692)

Our First IMMIGRANT*

Thomas Wynne (1627) is the son of Thomas John Wynne (1589) and Catherine Lloyd (1589). Thomas was born on the 20th of July 1627 in Bron Vadog, Flintshire, Wales.

Thomas lost his father when he was only 11 years old. He had been interested in the study of medicine at an early age, but the family was left with heavy taxed after Thomas Sr.’s death in 1638, and there wasn’t enough money for Thomas Jr. to buy learning materials.
He caught a break when he made acquaintances with an established surgeon, Richard Moore and soon after took apprentice until he was deemed worthy of licensing.

Thomas had been born into the Protestant faith, but in 1655, at the age of 28, he married a QUAKER, Martha Buttall (1627-1676) and found himself converted.

He became a devout Quaker and author of several pamphlets on Quaker Doctrine, he even faced persecution and six years’ imprisonment in England in the 1680s.

When his first wife, Martha, died, he remarried Mrs. Elizabeth Rowden (1637-1691) on the 20th of July 1676, and she accompanied Dr. Thomas Wynne as he joined WILLIAM PENN on his trip to America, leaving on the 30th of August and landing on the 27th of October 1682.

Thomas was William Penn’s personal physician, and while on the journey, Dr. Thomas treated a number of passengers who had small pox.

Upon arriving in the colonies, Dr. Wynne was notable for erecting the first brick house in the colony, his “LIBERTY LOT” on Front and Chestnut Streets. (known as WYNNE STREET until renamed by PENN in 1684).

Land purchased by Dr. THOMAS WYNNE

WYNNESTAY

Thomas built a home on 52nd street and Woodbine Ave in 1690 and named it “WYNNESTAY” ( a pun on the name of famous Wynnstay Estate in Wales), and several surrounding communities bear WYNN’s name! (including our own from his descendant!)

Thomas served as speaker for the first two Pennsylvania Assemblies of the Province in Philadelphia in 1687 and 1688 and acted as Justice of Sussex county, now a county in Delaware, from 1687-1691. He followed Penn back to England on his trip in 1684 and was appointed a justice of the peace in January 1690 and held the position of justice of the provincial court from September 1690 until his death in 1692. He was only in America for nine years.

As a side note, Jonathan’s sister, Thomas’ daughter Mary, was married to Dr. Edward Jones, who was one of the FIRST CONVERTS TO QUAKER.

Jonathan married Sarah Graves (1669-1744) in 1694 in Blockley Township, PA and in 1700 he built a stone mansion at “Wynnstay” on the site of a still older log building.

Mansion built by Jonathan Wynne, son of Thomas Wynne in 1700.

Sarah was the daughter of Abraham Graves (1649-1729) and Anna Hayward (1653-1705) who lived in Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.
